about
This song was written shortly after the death of a lifelong friend, Allan Goodman. Allan was an up-and-coming musician in the Texas music scene and was branching out into Nashville while battling stage 4 cancer.
Allan was a member of my high school band and virtually everything we did or talked about was music-related. It was both our ambition and goal to pursue music as a career and Allan was finally making it happen.
Unfortunately, despite his spirit and positivity, Allan succumbed to the horrific disease that ravaged his body.
Struggling with the loss of my own father and discovering my newborn son was deaf shortly prior to the loss of Allan, I had lost my desire to write music as well as the joy I once got from listening. Allan reinspired me and reminded me that I needed to write, record and find my voice again. It was difficult to disagree with someone who, facing the biggest challenge and struggle of his life, never once lost hope or was discouraged that he would prevail.
This song is a tribute to a fallen friend and dedicated to every friend and family member impacted by his loss to cancer on May 21, 2014. I can only hope that this songs brings solace to those that loved him and serves as a reminder that although he is gone, we can always hear his music and feel his legacy beyond his life on Earth.
VERSE I
-----------------
I could curse about a life that hasn't been fair,
Could have given up, give in to despair
But I've always had you, yeah you've always been there
To see me through another day
And even when the sky got darker still,
I made a promise to you that I'd fulfill
So when the clouds roll in and the rains do fall
Just look for me, and hear me call
CHORUS
-----------------
Well I'm leaving California on these wings they gave me,
Fly through Texas and then Nashville, see my friends again,
Then I'm headed to the biggest stage I've ever played,
Don't you miss me ‘cause I promised that I'd dedicate
A song for you, on a cloud you choose...
...When it rains
VERSE II
-----------------
You kept a brave face on, you stayed by my side
Found strength to go on where others would hide
And when the waves kept coming, certain to drown
Your faith held me up, when the world let me down
So when the sky grows black and erases the sun
While the raindrops fall in the passing storm
Close your eyes and listen to the downpour
Hear my favorite song tap on your window
CHORUS
BRIDGE
-----------------
Sometimes life doesn't seem to go our way,
We try to, but we can't control everything
Here in heaven I can almost reach the sun
Reminds me of the warmth I got from everyone
As you surrounded me and stayed through the long, long night
Never letting go I felt you hold me tight
Wipe your tears away because, in your embrace
I finally found the light
Though the skies will dry up…
The gray disappearing…
The rain will return,
While a new song is beginning
